Album Info:This album chronicles our adventure on one of the top tourist trains in the world. Our cruise ship, the Sapphire Princes, arrived in Skagway, Alaska early in the morning and we boarded a White Pass & Yukon train bound for Fraser, BC, Canada where we transferred to a tour bus that took us to Carcross in the Yukon Territory and back to Skagway. . The White Pass and Yukon Railroad has its origins in the Great Alaska Gold Rush of 1896 to 1899. The Canadian Government required prospectors to have enough supplies to last an entire year (2000 pounds) before they could embark for Dawson City and the Klondike. Since the means of transportation was by horse, mule or man power, the movement of material took several trips up and down either the ChilKoot Pass from Dyea or White Pass from Skagway, Alaska. Chilkoot Pass is a shorter distance, but very steep, while White Pass spreads the elevation gain over many miles. The 3-foot narrow gage railroad was completed near the end of the gold rush in 1898. That fall, over 1000 prospectors camped at Lindeman Lake and Bennet Lake and built rafts and boats during that winter. The town of Caribou Crossing (now Carcross) became a boat building meca. When the ice thawed in the spring of 1899 hundreds of boats and rafts set out from Lindeman and Bennet Lakes over a two day period for the 500-mile boat or raft trip to Dawson City via the Yukon River.

Carcross Station
Title:  Carcross Station
Description:  The first goal of anyone headed for the gold fields in the Klondike during the gold rush of 1896 to 1899 was to climb either the ChilKoot Pass from Dyea, AK or the White Pass from Skagway. The second goal was to get to Caribou Crossing (now called Carcross) at the head of Bennet Lake. From Bennet Lake it was a 500-mile boat, raft, etc. ride to Dawson City via the Yukon River.

The Only Duel Gage Track in Alaska
Title:  The Only Duel Gage Track in Alaska
Description:  The Skagway Pier has the only duel gage track (3' and 4' 8 1/2") in Alaska. When the pier was built, they were considering converting WP&Y to standard gage. It proved to be a bad idea because it would have taken more time to widen the rock cut ledges in White Pass to accommodate the wider track then it took to build the railroad and it would not have been cost effective.
